PAINTED BODIES AND PHOLOURIE: a solo art exhibit by Ajmal 'Mas Man' Millar

  • MAS MAN Art Gallery (inside Calabash Alley Caribbean Restaurant ) 2122 Candler Road Decatur, GA, 30032 United States (map)

Painted Bodies and Pholourie is the first solo art exhibit by Atlanta Caribbean artist, Ajmal 'Mas Man' Millar. The show features abstract mixed media paintings and a series of oil pastel drawings that he created from the time he returned to Atlanta from living in Brooklyn, NYC. Shortly after he returned his family opened a restaurant in the Candler- McAfee neighborhood. The neighborhood is known as a food desert and had no presence of an art venue for the community until Calabash Alley opened in 2013.  The space provided a few means to an end for Millar as he helped build his family's dream he moved closer to using creativity as his ultimate means of connection. The restaurant has served as his art studio, a mas camp, and sometimes a performance rehearsal space. Much of the artwork in this show was created in this very special space. Thus his work gathers around his Trinidadian heritage and his obsession with the art form called mas while providing the opportunity for discourse with contemporary matters. His work is colorful and spiritual... Honest and raw. The paintings are all considered painted bodies which individually represent how diverse the human race is, but exemplify how one's thoughts become forms or 'bodies'... energy is transformed into a body of work. Each art piece was once a thought gallivanting in Millar's mind until he decided to 'bring them to life.' His love for cooking Caribbean cuisine and his work as a carnival costume designer (Mas Man) heavily influences this body of work...  Painted Bodies and Pholourie opens on Friday April 28th, 2017. The opening is from 7pm to 10 pm and will happen at MAS MAN Art Gallery located inside Calabash Alley Caribbean Restaurant.
